Red face Banking In Australia!

Helo friends,
we are finally here!
Beautiful tablelands in Queensland!
settling in or atleast trying to!!
the ill luck has follwed us here too!
with all the time it took with our papers..we were glad to get the stamp and get out here..but!!
1.bank wont give us credit card becos the 457 visa is for 1 yr instaed of 4 years.(dont want to use Uk card as no funds will keep going in to that account)
2.Can i ever hope to buy a car(iwill need a loan!)
The weather is great and people nice..
i have always thought good things in life are food, shelter and good folk around you, good work,jobsatisfaction..but these issues with plastic and papers make me feel inadequate.
most grateful for your suggestions, advise please!!!!!!! to lost souls
many thanks

Hi mden, and certainly would have been a better arrival with a softer landing.
Is it just one bank you have tried re getting a credit account and I would try approaching the situation if you can by checking on which bank your employer uses if they will be using a pay into bank account for wages which is the normal situation, and see about oprning a savings account for that purpose with a credit card attached, there being various bank products along those lines.

If it is already the bank that your wages will be paid into, also check out other banks as your employer can pay into any bank or even a credit union and you may even do better with the latter, but the banking industry all over the globe is a bit on tenterhooks given the situation emanating from Wall st. and the US generally and that is rapidly spreading to the UK and Europe.

As a fallback, if your UK account is still open, you could still look at making deposits from here, either through a bank or via internet transfers - it just being an added expense but not too much if you made a payment every two/three months if possible.

I've moved it for you mden, and with a slightly modified title for whereas we might be Aussies, it is either Oz or Australia or downunder that you're in or where - Aussieland kind of grates!

Some banks will give you a credit card if you are working and agree to put a term deposit in that bank that is equivalent to the credit limit on the proposed credit card.

Of course, this effectively means you won't be able to enjoy real credit, but you get a plastic to use for local transactions without any foreign exchange penalties.

Regards
Peter
