Starting abusiness without a day job
I'm looking for a new job, and now I'm considering looking for short term contracts or even starting a business. The idea of not having a salary, or knowing that it will go away in x days is scary as hell.

You know you shouldn't quit your job to start a business. Think!

Definitely not something you want to try unless you have a lot of monet set aside, or are sure you can get a job really easily when you need it. At least do all the planning while you still have an income.

Yep, gigantic step and it's good to be scared as at least you are considering some of the What If and certainly be a lot of planning involved for a lot of issues - in addition to resources of small business associations and some gov. departments, I'd see if you can find someone who is doing something similar so as to get greater insight - never know, they might just be looking to expand.

Well, I've asked a lot of different questions here, because I really don't know what I want to do, or even what I should do. You all have given me a lot to think about.
I know that if I tried something like this I'd need a fair amount of money saved up, so I think I'll have to keep the day job. Besides, it may require more nerve than I have.

Keep the day job and build your referrals
You have to identify a source of income before you quit your day job. If you have no source, then every month you don't make money you go further into debt. Have you made a budget to identify your cost of living? If you have a freelance skill, you can make money through freelancing. Since you don't say what skills you have, not much anyone can suggest.

I think this post really is an "I hate my job and I want a way out" minor rant. There's another post about looking for a new job. There's a general level of frustration and no focus, maybe just starting to think about skills and other opportunities. All we can do is ask questions that might stimulate her (assumption here) to think about skills and such.

Yes, I think that's it. I sort of glanced over my other posts, and I really am floundering about, looking for something different to do.
In one of the other rant threads, it's been suggested that I try something like selling on e-bay, as a sort of test of a possible business. And I'm looking for an internal change at my job, too.

Maybe you should just pick something and 'give it a go'.

If you are Australian there is a program which the government pays a small salary to you while you set up your own business. It is called the New Enterprise Incentive Scheme.
