Hello Everyone
I am currently living in Hamilton, New Zealand and been going through the process of starting up my own business... Evidently my partner has got a fantastic job opportunity in Brisbane and we are now moving there in May 2008. I have looked into starting my business in Brisbane now but am wondering if anyone knows if there are any extra requirements or set backs due to me not being a Australian resident or citizin as yet.

Queensland Government has a Small Business section set up like a one stop shop so they say, and I think it comes under a rather large named ministry that covers from memory Sport, recreation and Consumer Affairs - I'll have a look and if it is not that I'll re post.

Hi Tracey - I'm a NZer living in Australia at the moment. There are no issues with you being a NZer -the issues are if you are used to our simple fair taxaation system you will be blown away with how old-fashioned and complex the Australian version is! Even if you are normal tax payer you have to file a tax return each year - how last century! Wanderers suggestion of going to the local SME support place is good! You may have to pay an accountant too and they cost about 2X the amount at home! OTOH absolutely everything is deductable - if your partner is on contract (rather permanent job) he can claim a living away from home allowance and rent as a deduction - that what my partner is doing ! Its good to be this type of "temporary resident" because it means you dont get caught up with paying capital gains on your NZ assets e.g. your home!
