Great to know just how crooked some cops are
Maybe I'm thick but having some trouble following the logic in this report.
Quote:
New laws were introduced two months ago aimed at providing protection for OPI officers from being charged or sued.
In this case, however, the laws stopped at least 12 investigators from testifying against the three detectives.
"The public cost is best served by not proceeding with a trial in recognition the prosecution has no alternative and cannot offer any evidence to support the charges," County Court Judge Tim Wood told the court.
"I have concluded it would be impossible to proceed and am required to enter pleas of not guilty."
Director of Public Prosecutions Jeremy Rapke, QC, had contemplated trying to get the case adjourned until the law was amended, but then asked for the trial to be stopped this week.
However, the accused detectives rejected the proposal so that they could clear their names.
Detectives Ziemann, 43, Colley, 36, and Taylor, 45, were friends and worked together at the Springvale criminal investigation unit in Melbourne's south-east.
They were charged following a sting - known as an "integrity test" - set up by the OPI in 2005.
