Haven't done it myself Colin but was having a good chat with a woman once who had and also had a traveller do some for me in an ad hoc manner once.
The woman was in her thirties and though one place she was working at was a bit of a hard slog, she still considered it fun and through that particular one scored a free swim with seals trip.
All up her experiences had been sufficiently good that she was intending to do a bit more on her return to Europe.
You may find that it is not always going to be an exact four hours a day, and maybe more like 5 say 5 or 6 days a week with a day off could be the norm and it's just something you discuss with the hosts on first contact and if you're somewhat flexible with hours/days, they ought to be as well.
If you end up with a slave driver or their accomodation/food provided is crap, then just be prepared to move on and put in a report to the organisation - you'll see on their site that some hosts may be suspended or being investigated.
I haven't checked their site of late but the Oz one had like a bulletin board for new hosts that hadn't made latest copy of their guide, and on that you could see some of the detail of what you might be in for including what accomodation will be as that can vary significantly, and from the board, for sure there seemed to be a great range of places and types of work - some cattle station work or working with horses I've seen with even a hint of more work and remuneration at times.
The woman I knew also found that she could look in her guide book for places that offered something she was interested in - like she went to a small mixed farm that had goats as she was particularly interested in goat farming. Also a great way as you've picked up to stretch the travelling budget.
If you're here on a WHV and looking to do three months seasonal work to qualify for a second WHV, wwoofing also qualifies you for the three months.
I had cause to look at the NZ site just recently and on registering, think there's a forum there, so you might check that for the Oz one too.
