We are not long past the anniversary of Australias' single battle greatest loss of life in our foray into Vietnam, brought to an end by the election of the Whitlam Labor government, and now:
Nine Aussie soldiers wounded in Afghanistan
Will it be eventual confirmation that Osama Bin Laden is dead that will make staying in Afghanistan worthwhile or will the value of being there be further questioned if terrorist attacks become more greatly spread about the globe?
The Taliban government may have allowed OBL to call Afghanistan home for he was there assisting in the demise of the Russian occupancy as were the US at the time, and civil war had reigned and still reigns for the deposed Taliban are of a people representing a majority in Afghanistan.
So the question may well be, how many years?, how many lives? will it be before there will no longer be the propping up of a preferred government.
