Government's "e-government" gets panned

The government is at least making a move into the 21st century by using the internet to communicate with the public, but its efforts have been panned by prominent bloggers, Darren Rowse and Duncan Riley (Bloggers pan Government's 'e-democracy' bid).

One of their first entries has nearly 200 comments. I haven't had a chance to go through all of them but the ones I read were all negative of the government's proposed firewall, the trial which is due to start very soon.

Quote:
"The whole [online blog consultation] thing is a joke considering Conroy's Great Firewall will kill internet speeds and drive up internet connection costs in Australia, potentially crippling online businesses."
The government should take a look at what Obama's team have set up: change.gov

I hope the government backs down from their internet filtering proposal. It is only going to make Australia fall behind in the internet age. Internet and online businesses are the only ones still making money right now. Imagine what could happen if the government invested the money they are throwing away in the car industry in internet and technology. I predict there will be no cars manufactured in Australia in two years.

Obama has proposed he will make a CTO type position and it would nice if the government also considered making a similar position in cabinet or in an advisory role.

There are a lot Australians battling away trying to establish internet businesses and not that I think they want government handouts, but I think they do need some recognition of what they are doing. They really are Australia's chance of building something real that is not just dug up out of the ground.
