Australian government warned about risk to gas sector

Is gas the new currency for Australia?

US natural resources giant ExxonMobil has today issued a subtle warning to the Australian government while at the same time suggesting Australia could become one of the leading suppliers of gas in the world. There are a number of ongoing developments in the natural resources industry which could place Australia at the top table with a potentially enormous increase in demand in the Asia-Pacific region.

Competitive edge

The Australian natural resources industry has developed at lighting quick speed over the last 10 or 20 years and indeed it is already one of the leading suppliers in the Asia-Pacific region. However, there is a growing feeling amongst oil and gas resource companies that the Australian government is ignoring the long-term benefits to crystallise short-term returns with the introduction of a variety of new taxes and levies on the industry. This, amongst all other issues, is the one which could reduce the Australian industries competitive edge in the medium term. [click to continue…]
