IT jobs in Australia and salary

It seems like there have been a few people asking about IT jobs and salaries in Australia. I would love to hear any feedback from people working in the sector. Like anywhere in the world, job opportunities are going to become scarcer and people will accept lower salaries for the same job, than they would have last year.

If you had to compare the average IT salary and cost of living with other countries, I don't think Australia would come out on top. Probably the only sectors that pay above average salaries would be in mining related industries and possibly skilled trades. It really is not difficult for a plumber to make a better salary than a lecturer working at a university.

If you want a nicer lifestyle perhaps in a pretty open and free country, Australia is good, but if you are looking to make more money than your own country, Australia might not be the best option, just in my opinion.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Hi everyone

I would be very interested in this as well. I am very interested in emigrating to Sydney with my family but have the usual job concerns. I have looked at the likes of jobserve.com but there seems to very very few IT jobs in Sydney there - is this just becuase it is not used in Australia? If so could someone point me to the best job board over there?

I also noticed that many of the positions had an "only people with Australian residency need apply" disclaimer - is this quite common?

Thanks

SEEK - Australia's no. 1 jobs, employment, career and recruitment site
Job Search, Employment Information and Career Advice at careerone.com.au

are the most common sites for jobs.

Yes, this probably is the case.

I have worked in the IT field in Australia ranging from field technician to on site technical support and server maintenance. In this field depending on qualification and experience starting wage is around $35,000 and can go right up to around $50,000 yr.

Is it possible for a foreigner to apply?

The disclaimer is there because for most working legitamacy you need to have residency, either temporary or permanent.

People with a Working Holiday Visa also get various work though there are limitations on how long they can work with the one employer and someone specifying residency is probably looking for a longer term employee.

Nothing to stop a foreigner applying but your chances of success would be low unless you had outstanding skills an employer may want, is having trouble finding someone appropriate and would be prepared to sponsor someone on a 457 visa.

Australia is a nice place, all you need is a job, but difficult to find.

Hi everyone,

I am looking into moving to Australia as well from Canada. I am a IT manager with 10 years experience, any idea of what kind of salary that would get me. I am looking at these types of jobs:

Manager of Information Systems
Senior Security Analyst
Senior Network Architect

Any help would be appreciated. Right now I'm looking at Brisbane.

Thanks.
