It all depends, really. Are you married? Are either of you Australian or New Zealand citizens? Is the child yours and your partner's? How long have you and your partner been together? There is a defacto or partner (spouse) visa and offshore, you're looking at around $2200 USD for the partner visa. I can't speak for the other visas so here is the pdf with all of the current charges for the different types of visas.

As far as costs, you'll need to consider quite a few things:

Visa fees
Photos for the app, medicals, passports
Postage (you'll want something with a tracking number)
Medical clearances
Police clearances
Fees for certifying copies
Airfare to get there if you're approved

I'm sure I've missed something, but it's in the thousands that you'll be spending.

I'm not sure what the rules are for the UK because everything is under the Queen but here's the immi home. There are wizard tools on the site to help you choose which visa you would need. Also, you might try calling them to see if they can help you choose the proper visa. I've asked them so many questions and they helped me with a lot of issues.

As for the processing times, I'm not sure. Every visa has a different processing time. So once you know which visa to apply for, you can ask them what the current processing time is and they should be able to tell you.

Good luck!
