Question Ielts for secondary applicant of Skilled – Independent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 175)

hii..

I am new to this forum.

I am planning to move to australia from India in Skilled – Independent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 175). So i am going to take an ielts test. And my wife will be coming with me in the spouse visa. My wife have done bachelors in engineering in india with all instruction conducted in English. And she have completed that four year course. But she have some arrears in her examination, so she dont have her Bachelor degree certificate. So my doubt is whether she can show this to meet the English requirements for secondary applicants or she have to apply for ielts.

When i went through Department of Immigration & Citizenship. I came across this information.

English requirements for secondary applicants is listed as below.

You must provide one of the following:

* your IELTS TRF Number to show you have a band score of at least four and a half (4.5) based on all four components.
Important: If you are using an IELTS test to show functional English, it must be from a test sat no more than 12 months before making your application.
* evidence that you have a degree, diploma or trade qualification requiring at least two (2) years of full time study or training with all instruction conducted in English
* evidence that you have completed at least one (1) year of full time study in Australia towards a degree or diploma qualification with all instruction conducted in English
* evidence that you have completed one of the following at an educational institution where all instruction was conducted in English:
o your primary education and at least three (3) years of secondary education, or
o at least five (5) years of secondary education.

Looking forward for your help.

Thanks in advance.

The regulations are very clear and applying them per se would mean that as your wife does not have her degree, she would not meet the requirements.

Your wifes study is possibly something that immi may take into account and to get an official immi reference to it, there is listed on the immi site under the skilled stream a link to pre lodgement enquiry.

I would email immi via that link and be very clear with your query and in mentioning that if you had a letter from the University attesting to your wife's study, ask whether that would suffice.

But do not be surprised if they just answer with the same quote of regulations that you have given for immigration officials are bound by law to follow the regulations which themselves are Australian law through legislation and the way it is looked at is if they start to make exceptions, where do they stop!!

since your wife is not completed the degree, it would be difficult to take that as proof.......it is always better to ask her to write IELTS, belive me it is really very easy and moreover she only needs 4.5 overall band score which is very easy

Hi there

great that this question was asked as this was preying on my mind also.... . So I guess seeing as I came to NZ when I was 17 completed secondary school here and have 2 undergrad and 2 postgrad quals from a NZ university I don't have to do the IELTS test as a secondary applicant?! Wahoo one more thing crossed of the list!

Just new in the forum.
For Skilled – Sponsored (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 176) - secondary applicant

QUESTION:
Is it required for a secondary applicant to take the IELTS examination?
I have a Certificate of Graduation (degree holder) and a Certificate where English is the medium of instruction.
Are my certificates valid for my application as a secondary applicant?

Note:
The immigration people are not helpful with this matter. I phoned them so many times and asked the same questions.
Their answer was and I quote, "If you feel that you meet any of the requirements, you are eligible."
The only answer that I want to hear from them is either YES or NO.

Based on the DIAC website, For secondary applicants and I quote:

"Level of English Evidence required
FUNCTIONAL
You must provide one of the following:

•your IELTS TRF Number to show you have a band score of at least four and a half (4.5) based on all four components.
Important: If you are using an IELTS test to show functional English, it must be from a test sat no more than 12 months before making your application.

•evidence that you have a degree, diploma or trade qualification requiring at least two (2) years of full time study or training with all instruction conducted in English

•evidence that you have completed at least one (1) year of full time study in Australia towards a degree or diploma qualification with all instruction conducted in English

•evidence that you have completed one of the following at an educational institution where all instruction was conducted in English:
◦your primary education and at least three (3) years of secondary education, or
◦at least five (5) years of secondary education"

Need your answers please. Thank you.

If you're saying Lordh that your degree course was taught in english for at least 2 years or you have done 2 years of alternately approved study with it being taught in english and have a document verifying it, you'll meet the functional level via item 2.

If not, then under the regulations you'll not meet the functional requirement unless you do an IELTS course to get a score of 4.5.

Thanks for your reply. I have completed my four year degree course and in those four years, all medium of instruction were conducted in English. I just can't imagine why the immigration people can't answer my questions direct to the point.

I also have a certificate equivalent to Australian degree course (BS Mathematics). My general question is... With all the certificates that I have (all are genuine and certified by JOP), will it suffice the requirement?

I'm not working at DIAC but looks like you comply with a Yes requirement.
