You do not have to live together for 12 months, or any other length of time, to establish a de facto relationship, but if you have not lived together you would have an issue satisfying a delegate that your relationship is mutual, exclusive, genuine and continuing. Registering a relationship is technically enough to satisfy the relevant schedule 1 (valid application) criteria. even if obtained after the application is lodged, but this is risky; they can make a decision at any time.
