The Gold Coast is a city in the State of Queensland in Australia. This is a coastal area located between the state capital of Brisbane and New South Wales. Because of its proximity to the beach, the city has become one of the must be tourist destinations in all of the land Down Under. The hub of tourism in the city is in the place called Surfers Paradise.

The Gold Coast is populated by a little over half a million people and takes most of the infrastructure, facilities, services and labor with the state capital. The main artery between these two cities are the railway and the motorway that connect the capital to this coastal area. The city is not just a coastal area as a great number of high rises as well as developmental areas make the city a vibrant hotspot for tourism as well as commercial activities in services and industry.

The Terrain of Gold Coast

The Gold Coast is a large area divided into districts for better governance. There is more to the Gold Coast than just what the tourist area is and these are the following:

§                     Paradise Point, Hollywell, Runaway Bay and Labrador – These northern suburbs of are largely residential areas for suburbia Gold Coast.

§                     Southport – This is the commercial centre of the city with shopping, hospitals, business, industry and government offices located in one area.

§                     Main Beach – An up market suburb with high rises and resorts. This is where most of the new property developments in the last few years have been constructed.

§                     Surfers Paradise – The most commercialized suburb in terms of tourism, with the highest concentration of accommodation and attractions for both local and foreign sun worshippers.

§                     Broadbeach – The second busiest suburb for tourists and is much more subdued compared to Surfers Paradise. It has many restaurants, high rises, a casino and 2 shopping complexes to serve the needs of tourists all year round.

§                     Mermaid Beach and Miami – Largely low-rise residential suburbs with activity along the highway in the form of motels and restaurants. This is where most budget tourists park their boards for the season.

§                     Burleigh Heads – Numerous high rise apartment buildings and a small commercial area. The beaches are popular with surfers and families.

§                     Palm Beach – Largely residential area where most of the more affluent inhabitants of Gold Coast reside.

§                     Currumbin, Tugun and Bilinga – Largely residential area dotted with apartments, papular with families and locals. This is located very near to the airport and motorway.

§                     Kirra, Coolangatta and Tweed Heads – The southern end has several high rise apartments hosting a small but popular shopping and entertainment area for locals and tourists alike.

§                     Gold Coast Hinterland – This is a large rural area inland away from the coast as it has the mountain ranges with virgin rainforest. There are also many national parks located in the area.

The Gold Coast has a mild sub-tropical climate all year round averaging thirty one degrees Celsius in the summertime and twenty five degrees in the wintertime. During winter, there is very little rainfall while the summers bring tropical cyclones coming in from the sea. This makes the Gold Coast a true paradise Down Under.

Unlike many other metropolitan cities in Australia, the Gold Coast has solved the problem of congestion by partitioning the business centers all throughout the city. This means you need to travel between these business hubs spread throughout the city of Gold Coast. This prevents the concentration in one area of a particular industry causing urban blight and other social ills.

The main attraction still for the Gold Coast are the beaches and beach front properties. The beach fronts stretch for about forty kilometers with as many as thirty beaches in the area. All the beaches are overseen and patrolled by volunteer and professional life savers. The following are the best beaches in the city:

§                     Surfers Paradise has a long stretch of beach, with flags and patrols ever few hundred metres along the beach. It is also the most popular and most crowded during the peak months. You can find a spot for your time under the sun but it may be filled with other sun worshippers such as yourself.

§                     Broadbeach is located further south of Surfer’s Paradise. The good thing about this area is it is not as crowded or touristy as its more famous cousin. Another plus is Kurrawa Park, a shopping centre full of cafes, restaurants and Jupiters Casino.

§                     North Burleigh is a further 4km down from Broadbeach It is a good place to go if there are winds blowing from the north as the hill provides a bit of protection. Although if there are northerly winds, swimming in the afternoon isn’t such a good idea as they’ll bring in the stingers.

§                     Burleigh Heads has a nice beach with a large park and a hill that is good for picnics. There are cafes surrounding the beach and the hill cover means that this beach is usually pretty nice when there are winds coming from the south
