Australian employers will be given the opportunity to discuss their options with skilled workers in the United Kingdom when the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) hosts Skills Australia Needs information sessions in London.

The event will be staged on February 25 and 26 next year and will give employers the chance to discuss potential employment and sponsorship opportunities with pre-screened skilled workers.

‘Skills Australia Needs events help address current skill shortages in areas of occupational demand in Australia, particularly health care, engineering and select trade occupations,’ a departmental spokesman said.

‘Interested skilled workers can apply to attend the events, however, only those with recognised qualifications and experience in one of the occupations targeted will be selected,’ he added.

Due to capacity limitations, organisations who lodge an expression of interest will be selected on a first in first served basis. The department approves organisations wanting to participate after a pre-screening process.

Interested skilled workers must also have a high level of English language ability and be under 50 years of age.

‘The department has staged these events for a number of years in various countries to provide information to workers about skilled visa options for Australia, with a focus on matching skilled workers with Australian state and territory governments and employers in targeted occupational areas,’ the spokesman explained.

Australian employers in those fields with current job vacancies they are unable to fill through the Australian labour market are encouraged to visit the department’s website for information on how to register to attend. The information sessions do not attract a participation fee.

More information about the Skills Australia Needs events for both employers and skilled workers is also available on the department’s website.
