The number of young people eligible to take a working holiday in Australia has been extended to various new countries and other relations expanded.

The number of working holiday visas for Chilean nationals, allowing young people aged between 18 and 30 can stay for up to 12 months and take short term jobs, has been increased from 1,500 to 2,000 per year.

Assistant Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Alex Hawke, said the increase reflects the importance of Australia’s engagement with the Latin American region. ‘In 2006, Chile became the first Latin American country to take part in Australia’s popular work and holiday programme. Many young Australian and Chilean nationals have since enjoyed the opportunity to explore each other’s countries, enhancing the exchange of knowledge and innovation,’ he said.

Australia now has reciprocal work and holiday agreements with Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay, among a growing list of countries in the region. The number of visas for young people from Argentina has also been increased from 700 to 1,500.

The number is also being increased for Spaniards from 600 to 1,500 annually. And the working holiday visa agreement that has been in the pipeline for almost six years between Greece and Australia has received approval by the Greek Government and will offer 500 places a year.

Meanwhile it has been suggested that a new visa for au pairs and nannies could be introduced in Australia. Hawke confirmed that discussions are underway about a visa that would allow them to stay for between 12 months and two years.

And if working holiday makers feel homesick while in Australia, a new campaign is encouraging their parents to visit them. Tourism Australia has launched the campaign in Germany to suggest they visit their offspring and experience what the country has to offer.

Two working holiday makers, Larissa and Ailina, won a Tourism Australia competition for their parents to visit them not knowing that it would be a surprise visit for them in the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
