Austria is the latest country to begin a work and holiday visa arrangement with Australia which is now in operation.

The arrangement allows young people from Austria aged between 18 and 30, to apply to stay in Australia for one year and undertake a period of short term work and study.

The same reciprocal conditions also allow young Australians to work and holiday in Austria. And there is the possibility of a visa extension if some of the work is undertaken in regional locations.

Assistant Minister for Home Affairs, Alex Hawke welcomed the start of the arrangement.

‘The work and holiday program gives young Australians and Austrians the opportunity to apply for a unique cultural exchange experience,’ he said. ‘These arrangements strengthen the positive relationship between our countries and will further build economic and people to people links.’

There will be an annual limit of 200 visas for Austrian nationals, who can apply from now and the same number of Australians can travel to Austria under the arrangement.

Austria has become the 23rd country to gain access to Australia’s Work and Holiday program, joining a host of other countries from Europe, Asia and the Americas.

However, a working holiday arrangement between Australia and Greece has not yet started despite a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries being signed last year.

An official start date has not yet been announced. It is understood that a final piece of legislation still need to go through the Greek Parliament before applications can get underway.

Other countries with working holiday arrangements with Australia include Belgium, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland,Italy, Japan, Korea, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.
