criminal record question

Hello. I tried searching and browsing to see if this question was already here but can't find anything. An American friend wants to come to Australia but has a criminal record in America. He stole a television. He paid the fines, took the theft class and completed probation. No jail time. He is worried this will prevent him from getting a job in Australia. Can he still get work in Australia with an American record?
