Getting in to the Big Trucks

Hey, Looking at getting in to operating mining haul trucks but I get the feeling nobody want to employ the "new guy", considering 99.9% of all advertised positions contain the common quote MUST have a minimum of 12 months haul truck experience. Any Idea's how to get this initial experience? been trying for a traineeship with KCGM but that place is literally over-run with applicants.

All feedback apperciated... Thanks

Hi Jesse,

In our experience there are some places that will take people without experience. This is advertised on occasion. However whenever positions like this are advertised this increases the number of applicants and competitiveness significantly. I did see an ad for Dump Truck operators with no experience in Weipa but you had to sort your own accommodation, not an easy task at times.

Some methods our customers have used in this situation include:
  • Registering direct with mining companies
  • Attending specific company promotion and information nights
  • Taking temporary positions with labour hire companies
  • Taking entry level labourer positions as a starting point

While media reports say that the mining sector is screaming out for people this does not mean it is easy to get in. Sometime you have to be in the right place at the right time.

Hope this helps.

Best of luck.

John
