Question New to site and looking for info

Hoping I can get some info.

I met my partner whilst visiting family in Australia in October 2009. When I returned home we spoke via phone (initially with International phone cards) and Skype. We both flew Kuala Lumpur for a holiday together in March/April 2010, he came to the UK for a holiday with me in August/September 2010 and I am returning to Australia in November of this year to be with him again.

We are wanting to apply for a Partner Migration Visa for me to go to Australia. I am just doing research at the moment to see what this involves and entails. I have downloaded the Partner Migration Booklet which states that we have to have lived with each other for a year before submitting an application. I'm a little confused. As far as I know I cannot go to Australia for a year to live with him as I am too old to apply for a Work and Holiday Visa (I'm approaching 46) and I'm not aware of any other way that I would be able to temporarily move to Australia to be able to live together for the required year. I am employed and have worked for my employer for approximately 28 years, I also own my own home via a mortgage so I am not in a position to do anything on a 'whim' so to speak.

Could anyone give me any advice or information as to how to go about this as I just seem to be going around in circles. I found this forum on the internet and hoped that someone may have been in a similar situation and could give me any tips or advice as to how to proceed.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Thank you in advance.
