Question Hi.....and help!!!!

Hi,
I am a new member and have soooo many questions most of you will get bored of me asking - so I apologise beforehand!!!

I am from the UK and both myself and my wife are going through the skilled migrant process as we speak. Realistically we should be flying out in about 10 months, but as neither of us have been to the country we thought we had better start gathering info, so we can hit the ground running.

We are going to the Perth region of Oz and have only heard great things about it and are planning to make it our permenant home - not just for the 4 possible years of the visa.

I know there are lots of good websites to get information from, but I am a firm believer in asking people who are already there or have gone through the process themselves to give me advice......hence the forum.

Rather than just pop a shed load of questions down I am going to take one subject at a time, any help you can give will honestly be gratefully appreciated!!!

Right, to my first topic - Healthcare. I know that unlike the UK, Australia doesn't really have an NHS system. With that in mind how does it work??? Do we need to get medical insurance and if so is it government organised or through private companies? Also do we still need to register at a local surgery and is that at a charge etc??? Furthermore is it the same for dentists???
I think that's enough for my first thread.
Thanks again for any help you can give, we can't wait to get down under!!!
Cheers, Kev.

Welcome!

I can't answer your healthcare questions for sure. But may I ask what's moved you and your partner to move to a country you've never been to on the other side of the world? Everyone I've talked to about it so far, including myself, is doing it either after long travels there or because of a partner there.

Hi Nelly,

Thanks for the reply and no worries about not knowing about the healthcare side of things.
In short we have always wanted to move to Oz and have also spent many years living and working in Europe. With that in mind and also the amount of research we have done and are doing, it's not like we are going into it with our eyes closed. We are young and both have good careers that will stand us well anywhere in the world and we know that we want more than what the UK has to offer us - Australia on the other hand has everything we could ever want! Both the wife and myself have always said that we feel like we were born on the wrong continent!!!!
