Moving to Canberra in April

Hi all,

Quick intro. I'm coming in on a Skilled-Sponsored 176 visa, arriving on April 5. No permanent lodging or job yet - working on those. I'll be staying in the hostel off the London Circuit to begin with, and then I'm going play it loose from there for a while. I'm looking forward to this next chapter in my life!

Cheers.

Thanks, Agamemnon. I'm eager to get there and start exploring what the ACT has to offer. I'm trying to shed some of the conservative culture I've built up here.

I think I'm pretty well prepared for the weather. I come from a similar climate in the States. Winters in my area bottom out around -10 and then stay in the single digits (although they're getting warmer...), then summers hit the 30s with oppressive humidity. I'm actually glad to be arriving in the cooler months, because I need a bit of a break from swampy summers.

Hi Mark,

Thank you much! Right now I'm looking for communications or outreach work. I was a civil servant here, and I think comms would be the easiest translation of my skill set. I'd look at government work, but it all seems to require either citizenship or security clearances - also, it wouldn't totally be in keeping with the "fresh start" I'm looking for if I picked up in the same sector. ;-)

I'm on the road right now, but I'll check out the jobs forum as soon as I can. Thanks again!

Hi Prolifax

I would presume that the ongoing $30 billion plus broadband network project might be an area of interest for you?

Hope you are settling in well.

Hi Mark,

I too plan to move to Australia probably Perth in search of work... sometime in May this year. I am a Graduate Mechanical Engineer with a 472-subclass work visa. Do you have any advice or provide me any leads to some relevant openings?

Cheers..

Hi Prolifax, there's a good community through the US embassy here in Canberra (and possibly some locally engaged opportunities with them). Hope you're settling in we'll. I'm a local.
