Pop into your local Medicare office to get a Medicare card, if you haven't already. You might need to bring your Visa grant letter with you.

As for jobs, it's been a while (almost 10 years) since I've lived in Aus, but they used to have a place that you could look for jobs attached to Centrelink offices. Not sure if that's still the case in the digital age. I would just go on SEEK.com.au and such. Or do an online search for help with resumes and cover letters and just bite the bullet and apply for some jobs. If you're not getting anywhere I'm fairly sure recruitment agencies might be able to help you out - depends what kinds of jobs you'd be going for.

You'll need to apply for a Tax File Number (TFN - similar, not quite the same as SSN) to be able to work. Well you technically don't need to have a TFN to work, but if you don't you will get taxed at the highest possible rate and giving much of your hard earned bucks to the government, and who wants to do that

Hello Forum

My name is Jillian,
I actually arrived in Australia in November of 2014, on a 457. Things were just thronging along and then i met the love of my life. We moved in together and started our new life. The company I was working for for the last 10 years wanted me to relocate to Indonesia. That just wasn't our future plans. So we contacted an immigration attorney and started the process or we thought we had started the process. After my 457 was canceled we found out the attorney we hired didnt follow up with the application and it was sitting in an unattended fax machine. ISSUE, big issue i was now in the country illegally, filed for and got a bridging visa E, not the ideal visa as i had a very sick mother(cancer), and a e visa doesn't allow you to leave the country. So we thonged along for almost 15, months. got married, bought a house, all that great stuff you do with the love of your life. Then BAM momma took a bad turn (this is a women who fought for 9 years and never once asked for any help. In early November of 2016 momma called, baby how's that visa coming along, "its doing good momma why?" "Well honey I need you to come home I'm not doing good at all, not sure how much longer I'll make it." No problem momma. Big problem i cant leave the country without forfeiting my last 15 months and starting all over for out of country. Many phone calls later and a Great immigration agent Micheal, and i was able to call momma, " i will be on a plane Saturday, love you momma. So with Immigration's blessing i left the country. With instruction to call Michael often and keep him posted as to what was going on with Momma's health. I arrived in the USA on the 18th of November. Less then 3 very short weeks later my dear momma passed away. 4 days later called Michael and finalized the rest of the application, Medical and FBI check. Filed for a visitor visa to come home on February 4th 2017. February 14th letter requesting more information, and an explanation of why they were going to deny my visa. Nice of then to ask for information and tell me at the same time they weren't going to grant it. In the mean time I have the Partner visa immigration agent sending me letters requesting me to re-enter the country so they can finalize my 820, visa. Sent all required information to visitor visa immigration and followed up weekly (well followed up the bet we could since you cant actually talk to anyone). End of February no news, end of march no news, last week of April and I'm now 18 days short of 6 months out of the country and away form my husband(missed our first married Christmas, our anniversary, delt with the death of my momma, and the death of our beloved frenchie(Tully) the separation is really starting to wear on both of us. Supporting two households in two different countries, the tremolo of checking my immi account 50 times a day to see if there was any news, it was all adding up to nothing good. Finally got ahold of the Omsbudsman and asked if they could help. Three days after they filed an inquiry i got a letter of approval for my visitor visa. 5 days short of 6 months i landed in Australia this Friday, have never been so happy, or so i thought, then at 8:20 Monday morning I received a call from the immigration attorney, my 820 visa had been granted that morning. I know long story but it has all lead up to holy cows now what do i do. LOL how to go forward form here with my life until the 801 process, is finalized.

Thanks all for any and all help suggestions and comments
