There is no requirement for a joint statement.

There IS a requirement for a statement from the applicant AND a statement from the sponsor, each in your own words.

The online application for both applicant and sponsor has 5 text boxes with a question for each about your relationship. If you answer those, that counts as your personal statement (and same for the sponsor).
