Hi,
New to site. I am presently researching pos move to australia (thinking south australia). Move with wife and 3 kids.
Very nervous to make big step. What worries me is will we beable to afford to live comfortably in oz on our earnings. I will be the main earner registered nurse,my wife will work part time and needs to fit around kids.
When paid migration expenses I will be moving with little money, I just dont know how realistic it will be to get back on a property ladder at my age (41) with little capital.
We have plenty of other questions but this is our greatest fear, hope someone could help on here,
Hope to speak soon Warren:D

Hi Warren,

Where in South Australia are you thinking about moving to?
Would it be Adelaide or somewhere else?

Check out some property websites such as Real Estate, Property, Land and Homes for Sale, lease and rent - realestate.com.au which has sales and rentals. That will give you some idea of the major costs.

We were both self-employed (me IT and my husband a gardener) and we were advised to buy a property over here in Australia for investment since we could show income in the UK. We were advised that we wouldn't be able to get a mortgage once we moved over since we were self-employed so that's what we did and it worked well for us.

Interest rates are expected to go up about 1% this year so if you do go for a mortgage then allow some extra in case rates go up.

Regards,
Karen

HI Warren

I understand your concerns, but as advised, research is an important part of any relocation endeavours. I have counciled my clients over the years and always try to explain that it is important to remember that you cannot make a 'latteral' move, and have to adjust to the new and not compare with the old... It's very much how you approach such a big move which will have a determining factor as to how it will all turn out. You cant expect to shop at Marks and Spencers prices if you are only earning enough to shop at Tescos. It has taken the majority of my clients 3 - 5 years to get back to the standard of living that they had in the country they have moved from, in my case most of my clients are from South Africa. By going in with the right attitude, right information and the right expectations they knew that the first few years would be 'on the bone' but by hard work and determination they all now have what they wanted.

Time to start that research!!!! Regards Mary
