Question Hello from sunny Brissie!

Hi everyone,

I have been living with my partner in Brisbane now since October 2009 and loving it. We met in the UK and have been together for 2 years and hopefully we will be applying for the de facto visa soon. I am irish and a teacher and am currently on a WHV. We did look at getting the skilled migrant visa last year but we were going to be apart for too long (possibly a year) and the WHV only took 48hrs!
From reading everyones threads I should be starting to organise it now so I can get all the stat decs done etc I have a police check from the Uk as I needed it for teaching in aus but does anyone know if I need a fresh one or just an aus one?
Also, how long do the medicals last for? If I can get that done now it would be easier.
If my WHV ends in Oct when should I aim to apply for the de facto? how do i know if they will give me a bridging visa?

Any help would be really appreciated
This is a great site my partner and I have learned so much already so thanks everyone, I hope to get chatting to a few of you soon

Hi boo boo,
And seems you're on track with what you want to do and yes, Brisbane weather would be easier to take than that in the UK, even if a bit humid for a few months.
Bridging visas are virtually an automatic kick in when one is here on a visa that allows them to apply for an onshore visa.
Your police check should be good if you aren't going back before you get a partner visa granted and health checks are good for 12 months.
You'll also likely need an Aussie police check even if you got some sort of a clearance here for teaching.
Have you actually got teaching work on the WHV and did you already do a TA assessment or did you just have to register with Queensland, just out of interest.
Re applying for the defacto, the only issue that people have when they have been on a WHV is unless they had previously been living together and there had only been minimal break, then they could be considered borderline re having the 12 months together.
If you were living together in the UK and have solid evidence of that, it shouldn't be a problem and you might as well look at getting an application in as soon as you have 12 months up and are ready.

Ask more if you need to and also the more people in Oz or anywhere for that matter who post in all sections, the better a forum we'll have.
