Moving to the Gold Coast

Hi my husband and I are in the last stages of applying for a permanent skilled visa.
We have recently spent a month looking around the Gold Coast area and have fallen in love with the place. We plan to move to either mermaid waters or broad beach, are these nice areas to bring up children? We have 4 sons.
We have looked at Somerset College for our youngest but would appreciate any advice with regards to schools and nice areas to live.
Thanks

Hi OP, I live on the Gold Coast. Yes Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach are nice areas, but then I think it's hard to find a bad area on the GC. I live near Robina in the hinterland, and we love it here because it's a bit quieter. You son is going to be travelling a fair distance each day from Broadbeach or Mermaid to get to school if you're looking at Somerset College, because that's just up the road from me.

I've heard good and bad things about Somerset, I used to work at a local school near Somerset and met a few parents that had pulled their children out and put them in a local State school, only because the expectations were so high that it put too much pressure on the kids. It's the most expensive school on the Gold Coast, but that doesn't necessarily make it the best. They will paint a pretty picture for you when you enquire, but I suggest the only way to find a good school is to talk to other parents at different schools, which will be hard if you're not here.

When we arrived we didn't enrol our kids in school for three months so we could have a good look at what schools they should go to. We also picked the school first, and then the area to live, so that we wouldn't have to move them out if we changed suburbs later on. We moved into a gated complex initially for 6 months just to see if we liked the area. I was great, it was like being on holiday permanently, you'd look out your window and all you'd see was palm trees, we had a shared resort style swimming pools, sauna and gym, 3 bedrooms, two balconies, 3 toilets, 2 bathrooms and a double garage for $350 a week.

So it depends if your kids are academic or sporty, lots of schools specialise in different things. Check out the myschool website, they have stats on there for each school.

Check out Burleigh as well, great area, close to the beach, there's a great state school there. I like all areas around the southern Gold Coast, including Robina, Mudgeeraba, Tallai, Worongary, Tallebudgera, Kirra, Coolangatta. You can't really go wrong wherever you choose.

Hope that helps?
