Hi Lyns,

I have got the same question many times and usually the best way is too look for answers on the Internet. I can not post links, but for Sydney the top 100 things to do site is very useful and most of the offers are affordable for low budget tourists and overseas students too.
Probably works for any part of Australia.

Cheers,
Adam

Hi Lynns and Adam and Australia is pretty well set up for backpacking budget travel and accommodation and though some people like to just lob and see what happens it can end up expensive if like most with that idea, Sydney is the place they lob first.
There's a heap of threads about budget travelling in the Travel section and a few key things are:
. We have a tropical wet summer period in the north so best to stay below the Tropic of Capricorn, say a line from Rockhampton, Qld. to Geraldton WA from November/December to April/May, Stingers in the sea too during that time amd also leave ideas on visiting the centre also to May to November as even in November it'll be getting extra hot.
. Accommodation in Sydney for Xmas/NY starts to be booked about July and by now each year you could be scratching to get something but for hostel accommodation generally, sites like BUG - the Backpackers' Ultimate guide to budget travel in Australia and YHA Australia Hostels - YHA Australia. au are good.
. If your budget extends to it and sometimes some good cooler weather time packages, even consider Lord Howe Island, NSW, Accommodation, Tours, Events and Hire but do not forget the bigger Island either, Tasmania and for a poor mans LHI with a tropical flavour, Great Keppel Island is not too bad at either.
But plenty of places to get about too and if you want to do some things on the cheap to be able to splash out on others, there's plenty of opportunities for that with the likes of WWOOF Australia Official Website, camping and doing campervan relocations.
. If you're on a WHV, have a look at Harvest Trail - Harvest jobs - Australian JobSearch to get an idea of where to be when to pick up seasonal work and you may want a second WHV.
