If you're coming from the UK general direction, check out Air Asia for cheap flights ex Stansted as all the regular airlines will have uppity pricing for leaving in the month or so before Xmas.
You might also want to spend some time in Asia for a cultural dip too and it's bloody cheap compared to Oz. and with AirAsia you could fly into KL and travel about a bit and get a cheap flight to Oz from a number of places, Singapore to Perth with Welcome To Tiger Airways or even Macau to Sydney with Viva Macau Airline | Welcome , maybe find out when the Chinese NY is or other lunar festivals etc. in Asia.

Smile

Ive checked out some places ,, Bali has caught my eye ,, thinking now of going there for the christmas new year period and chilling on a beach .. and then continuing on to Brisbane or Melbourne , trying to avoid Sydney . Alot of my friends went direct to Sydney blew there money and had to come home {thats them tho} .Because i have left it too late for hostels ,,im sure id get 1,,but, im on a strict budget ,id rather stopover in Bali and perhaps not spend half as much as i would if i go to Sydney , Tight budget= more time travelling in the campervan .. after xmas flights are cheaper and therefore i get to see Bali and miss the big expense of christmas in sydney ,
