Yesterday we received my sponsor's AFP check in the post and - oops - it shows a drink driving charge from over 20 years ago, in his young and foolish days. Just checking this is not likely to affect my 309 visa application, is it? I imagine they are looking for more serious charges......

Can I just say, it's so annoying that I regularly ask questions here and the answer can be found on the website, in spite of the fact that I searched the website before asking? Makes me feel a little stupid.

The website is full of sublinks to sublinks and a lot of information I know is on there I have to get to by roundabout ways. If you didn't know it was on there, sometimes you wouldn't know where to find it. So don't feel bad, lol.

If a drink driving offence is considered a criminal conviction is fairly complex, it is dependent on the state the offence is committed in, and how the matter was dealt with.
In this case it has no bearing on the sponsors application, however it can become a problem for someone trying to travel overseas, as a number of Australians have discovered when trying to enter the USA, only discover their drink driving conviction made the guilty of committing a crime of moral turpitude!
