Hi everyone! I have some questions that I hope you might be able to help me with. I met my husband here in Australia and when I met him, he was on the skilled visa route (485 and stuff) so he was on route to get PR without me. However, we recently got married a few months ago and now we are thinking about which path he should take to get PR. Should he continue on the skills path or the marriage path? The marriage one is more expensive, but he could apply for PR sooner. Any thoughts or suggestions?

  • The partner visa is more expensive, will take longer to process plus there is an additional waiting period to get PR.
  • Skilled migration is cheaper, faster, leads straight to PR and your husband won't be dependent on you for his visa.
  • The partner visa is maybe more of a certainty, as long as the relationship is genuine and ongoing.
  • If time is a factor and there are too many uncertain factors with a skilled visa application, I'd go for the partner visa as soon as possible.
  • If you're not in a hurry, it might pay to put in an Expression of Interest when your husband meets the requirements for the skilled visa and see what happens. He will of course require skills assessments, English tests and all that.
