ACT Skilled Migration Plan: Subclass 190 applications closed for overseas applicants until recommencement in 2017

The government of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) recently issued an advisory concerning Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) nominations from that Territory. The sponsorship program by the ACT under Subclass 190 has been closed for overseas applicants until recommencement during 2017. The decision was stated as having been made due to the oversupply of skilled occupations in the ACT.

Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190) is a permanent residence visa for qualified points-test skilled workers who apply and are successful in receiving "nomination" to work and live in the nominating Australian State or Territory Government area. An applicant may be nominated where the occupation is in demand within that jurisdiction and the applicant meets certain criteria stipulated by both the State of Territory Government and of course, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

Accordingly, at this time, any applicant who would like to apply for ACT nomination, cannot now begin a nomination application to the ACT until the nomination program resumes during the next year.

However, any application submitted prior to the advice of the ACT Government (13 September 2016) will continue to be processed (in queue order), as long as all necessary supporting documentation has been attached prior to lodgement of their application.

Applicants who are living in Canberra are not affected by this advisory, as they will still be able to lodge applications, provided they hold an appropriate occupation and meet the required nomination criteria set by the DIBP and the ACT Government.
