To satisfy the criteria for the mandatory pre-migration skills assessment you would need a 'highly relevant' qualification, assessed as comparable to an Australian degree and a period of highly relevant work experience.

Actuary (ANZSCO Code 224111)

This occupation requires a qualification assessed as comparable to the educational level of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Bachelor degree or higher degree, in a field highly relevant to the nominated occupation. In addition to this, applicants must have undertaken at least one year of post-qualification employment at an appropriate skill level in the last five years which is highly relevant to the nominated occupation.

A positive assessment of both qualifications and employment is required for a positive Skills Assessment Outcome.

This occupation requires a major in Actuarial Studies or Actuarial Science. Actuarial Studies is the application of mathematical and statistical analysis in order to solve financial planning problems in areas such as insurance, superannuation and investment (ASCED). Qualifications in Mathematics or Statistics with supporting highly relevant employment will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

A highly relevant field of study is the 'major' field of your qualification that matches your nominated occupation for skills assessment purposes. It is the discipline (study area) which is assessed as suitable preparation for employment in your nominated occupation in Australia.

In order to determine whether a qualification is in a highly relevant field of study to the nominated occupation, VETASSESS considers a number of factors including (but not limited to):

• whether you hold a specialised qualification or whether your qualification has a major or whether your qualification has a major field of study which VETASSESS has identified as being suitable for the occupation in Australia
• the depth (progression) and breadth of study in the major
• the employment outcomes of the qualification in the country concerned
• course requirements - including whether any thesis work, major projects, internships/work placements were needed in order for the qualification to be achieved.

You would need at least 12 months relevant post-qualification work experience for a positive skills assessment. How much more you might need to attract the points to be invited to apply for a visa depends on the circumstances of your case.
