Hey everyone,

My partner is getting her AFP check this weekend, so naturally I have a few questions. We are applying offshore for a partner visa, she lives in Canada with me and has so for well over a year now.

Our Canadian police check required a finger print scan done by an accredited firm. When my partner applies for her AFP (online) will she have to get (and pay for) another finger print scan?

After a quick look online, my partner has the required points to apply online for her AFP, however, there's a part of the application that has me somewhat confused. Section 2.3 - Purpose of Check. Under this section it lists the following reasons for the police check: Working in the ACT & Commonwealth Employment/Purpose.

From what I can see, the best option to select is the Commonwealth Employment/Purpose. Once selected it gives you the option for "Immigration/Citizenship - For Supply to the DIBP"

That leads me to believe that is the best course of action when making the application for the AFP. Would that be correct? Can anyone else share their experience with applying for their AFP overseas?

Thank you!

No, AFP clearance for DIBP purposes is name check only.

Yes.

It was relatively simple (compared to FBI checks!) - fill out form, upload ID documents, make the payment. I got an email notification the following day that my certificate is in the mail. It took about 2-2.5 weeks to arrive in Ireland, though I know some people have had issues with it getting lost in the mail. If you have family or trusted friends in Australia you could have the cert posted to them, they could scan it in and email you the scan which you can then upload - a lot faster than waiting for it to arrive in Canada.

Thank you! I suppose I answered my own question, eh? Haha. But thank you for your help! Much appreciated.

They mail you the form? I thought it would be an email, but maybe I just didn't read enough. That's fine - We have my partners family, who are all based in Australia. That's perfect! Thanks again!
