Hi everyone
Wondering if anyone happens to have the answer to this...
I have Australian Permanent Residency, I am also a dual national of both UK and Ireland. I have always travelled in and out of Australia on my UK passport - but is it possible for me to also leave and return on my Irish passport?
The reason being...I got married and am currently in the process of updating the name on my UK passport. We have a trip booked to the UK at end of July. The flights are booked in my married name, as I assumed I would easily have enough time to receive the new UK passport.
However, I have today received an email from the UK Passport Office stating that as my Irish passport is still in my maiden name (its actually expired since last year, I just hadn't renewed it yet as I never use it) they will not issue my new UK passport until I have changed my Irish passport to also be in my married name. The Irish Embassy has advised the processing times on this from overseas are currently 8-10 weeks. I then have to send a photocopy of the new Irish passport to the UK Passport Office and hope that they can get my new UK passport to me before I am due to fly out. I know I am going to be cutting it VERY close...I have 15 weeks until I fly.
So my question is, if the UK passport doesn't arrive in time, could I potentially just travel on the Irish passport instead? I realise I will need to advise the immigration department of my updated passport details. I was under the impression that my UK passport was my 'principle' passport and my PR was linked to this, but i'm hoping I am wrong and it is actually linked to both passports.
Have any other Permanent Residents got any experience travelling in/out of Australia on different passports?
I am planning to ring them tomorrow and see what answer I get but just wondering on the off chance someone here has an answer for me...
