Hi Y’all –

Few questions about Bridging Visa B while on a BVA waiting for 820 approval (applied 2 months ago for the 820).

1.) If we’re going to Europe May 1st to May 18th, should we apply for the Bridging Visa B on February 19th? I understand we can’t apply later than 3 months away from travel dates, but I don’t want to book flights/hotels until I know we have the BVB.
2.) If at the point of travel is just like 7 months after Partner Visa 820 application, then immigration should have no problem with us visiting Europe for 3 weeks, right? This will be my only time overseas during the partner visa application approval process and the estimated wait time is 20+ months.
3.) Can we apply for the BVB online? I’ve read in the past it had to be done at the Sydney office, but thought I saw it can be done online now? I’m confused.
4.) When we return to Australia, will the BVB discontinue and I go right back onto the BVA? I will be taking annual leave from my job for this overseas travel and will return to the job, so just want to verify the visa situation too for when I return to my work.

1) The BVB will be valid from the date it is granted and will have a limited travel facility on it, so you should not apply too early. They are not issued for future travel as far as the start date is concerned.
2) Can't comment on what someone at DIBP may be thinking.
3) Yes, through your ImmiAccount.. The ones I have done lately were granted in a matter of days.
4) No, the BVB replaces the BVA and will stay in effect on your return to Australia, but the travel facility will expire eventually.

1.) During the BVB application (yes, you can apply online through Immi account if you submited your partner visa via Immi account), you would need to attach evidence for the travel. Most people will attach their flight itinerary as evidence. I guess that how it works, but not to worry too much there's no reason for DIBP to refuse your BVB application. You may plan to apply BVB a month before your travel, some will be granted 3 months BVB, and some get 7 months.

2.) I dont see any wrong with travelling to oversea during the 820 visa assessment period but just bear in mind they might inform you to return to Australia during your travel for grant of 820 visa because you need to be in Australia in order for the grant to happen. It happened to me, towards the end of my travel I received an email from DIBP informing me to return to Australia for visa grant. The good thing is they always give you 28 days to respond and revert. Since you are travelling for 3 weeks, I guess you dont have to worry if DIBP requests you to return for the grant of visa.

3.) Yes you can.

4.) As far as I know BVB will override BVA until it expires. It's a multiple entry visa, you may travel in and out for multiple times as long as it's within the validity period. If you get only 3 months, then by the end of 3rd month you will be back to BVA. No more travelling out after that, unless you apply for another new BVB.

This is incorrect. You will no go back to a BVA. The BVB will remain in effect. Once the travel facility expires, you do need to apply for another BVB, if you want to travel again.

Thanks!! When I return, will the Bridging Visa B definitely have full work rights like the Bridging Visa A currently does? I read that didn't use to be definite, but does anybody actually with BVA work rights get denied work rights on a BVB these days?

My wife’s 820 visa hasn’t been granted yet but we’ve thought of getting her BVB so we can apply for schengen visa.

Hi Mate - Our 820 visa actually ended up getting approved 2.5 months before we going to travel outside of Australia for the first time, so we didn't end up having to apply for a Bridging Visa B. I applied in mid-October and then in mid-March 5 months later my 820 got approved, which enables travel outside US unlimited. Best of luck!
