Hi there, I recently finished 24 months of studies in UNSW which puts me eligible for a temporary graduate visa (485). Due to a late completion of my internship, there is a very short timeline between receiving my conferral letter from the university and my student visa expiring (15 March). Besides that, I'm afraid that if I apply for other relevant documents now in Malaysia, it will not arrive Australia in time for me to submit while I'm there. From the website, it states that I can apply for a 485 visa provided I am in Australia and hold a substantive visa if I have held a student visa in the past 6 months. Does this mean that I can apply for a ETA tourist visa (I'm from Malaysia) and lodge my 485 application in Australia while on the tourist visa?

A substantive temporary visa is any visa other than a bridging visa, criminal justice or enforcement visa, which allows the visa holder to remain temporarily in Australia.

The clock is ticking, would really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Is your student visa still in effect?
Yes, until 15 March 2018. However I understand that since my course has finished, my student visa has effectively expired and I will need another visa regardless to enter Australia now. Hence, I'm thinking of applying for ETA subclass 601 in order to lodge my 485 application onshore. I have seen other Malaysians do the same in the past
These are the requirements relevant to my situation from the home affairs website:

You have held an eligible student visa at any time in the past six months and:
you now hold a Bridging visa A or Bridging visa B, or
you now hold a substantive visa.

Since I don't have a BVA, I would assume an ETA would suffice as a substantive visa.

Thanks!

An ETA would suffice, but might not be necessary.

Exact same situation man, any updates on your outcomes? Help a fellow malaysian out please haha
You should be able to get your uni letters before your student visa expires, if not you should contact your uni. I contacted my uni to request for my results earlier. The moment you apply for 485 you will get a bridging visa. I think I got my uni letters like one week before my student visa expired.

Oh that's cool man! I've indeed received my completion letters etc from the uni. You're saying I can apply for a 485 even if my student visa expires whilst providing those documents yeah?
