I had lodged my visa application for 489 family sponsorship on 25th Dec 2014. But in the status it still shows as "in progress". How long on an average does it take for a case officer to be assigned?
I have not uploaded any documents yet, would be doing it in a day or two as I was waiting for my PCC doc. Could this be the reason that the case officer has not been assigned.
I have heard many times on the forum that you have only 28 days to upload all your documents, though this is more for partner visas. Not sure if it is the same for your visa subclass.
I recommend you to upload your documents asap. It has been almost 2 months since you lodged your application.
It is not uncommon for not getting a CO even after 6 months. You just have to wait patiently.

Thanks Kaleidoscope. I was under the impression that you can submit the docs any-time after lodging the visa. I'll be uploading the docs today itself. I was just waiting for my PCC.
Any idea what is the usual timeline for a 489 family sponsored visa? I know it is a priority 4 visa and would take time, but on an average how long does it take if everything goes well with the documents.
I'm not sure how long it will take for a case officer to be assigned, but I would STRONGLY recommend you upload your other documents immediately. DIBP can start looking at your application and if they find no supporting documents, it's possible they can take the position that you have no evidence of your experience, qualifications, etc. and simply refuse the visa (they did this to a poster who applied for a partner visa and was told by a DIBP representative not to submit any documents until requested).
You can always add your police checks separately once they are received.
Thanks Maggie. I really didn't know that not uploading the documents would have such impact. I've started uploading the docs in hand.
