I am an Australian citizen exploring ways to sponsor a child to Australia. The child is under 5 year old living in the Philippines and we are related through my biological father who lives in Singapore.

The child's mother is unable to adequately care for the child. My partner and I are willing to care for the child on the provision my father obtains legal custody and permission to remove the child from the Philippines. I know there are many challenges ahead but I would like some advice on where to start and recommendations on which visa to apply for etc.

In particular, I'm not certain of our eligibility for a family child visa given the complicated relationship (not a step sister as my dad is not in a relationship or living with the child's mother) and also whether a student visa or if there are any other type of special consideration visa is feasible. Will also consider adoption as well if it is an option. Thanks!

Had an earlier post but my satellite connection went on the blink when posting should have occurred and so in brief and not that I can be considered an expert, I feel your only avenue fordoing something permanent would be via a child visa and the only way of you being able to do that would be by adoption if that is possible.
Have a read of Booklet#2 via Information Booklets - Applications & Forms - Visas & Immigration

Immi do not get involved in adoptions themselves you'll see mentioned in there and thus that is going to be a matter for the mother, Philippino and State or territory authorities here.

I suppose another totally different approach is to see if you can sponsor her specifically in the Phillipines through some of the Aid Funds, Children Christian Fund being an organisation that I have contributed to and they'll possibly do work in the Philippines.

I do not know that Immigration lawyers actually get involved with adoption processes and like all lawyers they will probably be more than willing to charge you for a referral but as Immi are the ultimate authority for immigration, so you'll find the state/territory government department responsible the authority and getting some info on adoption rules might be a good idea too.

Thanks Wanderer for the advice and suggestions.
The immigration lawyer I am seeing is a friend, so hopefully I won't be charged through my nose for any referrals.
I wanted to see if I can do away with adoption as she is related to me and simply apply for a child visa.
