Hi,

Me and my wife just had a baby in Australia (8/6/18), my wife have a Permanent Residency.

We want to apply for an Australian Citizenship for our baby.

I went to homeaffairs.gov.au, there were links in how to apply for a Citizenship, but not how to apply for your baby.

Can someone help me in this matter, as it is a bit confusing for us.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Forat

Have a look at https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/trav/citi/curr/evidence-of-australian-citizenship/eligibility

You can only apply for evidence of citizenship for children under 16 years of age if you are the responsible parent of the child. Your application must also include a certified copy of your current identity document with your photograph and signature, such as your passport or driver license.

You are not applying for Citizenship, just evidence of citizenship.

Children born in Australia automatically acquire Australian citizenship if at least one parent is an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of the child's birth.

So a newborn already have an Australian Citizenship, we just need an Evidence of that, after applying, the next step will be to apply for an Australian passport, or can we bypass the evidence and apply for a passport straight away.

Yes your wife's PR and the birth certificate (and other stuff) will gain an Australian Passport for the child.

Australian Passports are only given to Australian citizens.

I thought that the process to obtain is an Australian passport for a newborn in Australia, is to apply for a Birth Certificate, then apply for citizenship (or Evidence of citizenship), then for the passport.

But what I understood from this forum, is to apply straight away for the passport, bypassing the Citizenship/Evidence of citizenship process.

Am I correct

Previously people have had difficulty applying for a passport as they didn't accept the printout of the PR visa grant as evidence that a parent was a PR. So the steps have been as you describe and the evidence of citizenship was required. I'm not sure if it's changed recently that they would accept the PR visa grant printout.

I checked the australian passport website, and they mention if one of the baby's parent have a PR, they need to apply for evidence of citizenship
