If I take the test on the date that they have given and everything is approved and I get the ceremony date in next few months but I want to delay the citizenship ceremony till next year January.

Is it possible to do so as I have plan to go overseas in December.

I guess you can. They just want to make sure you're in Australia when you're invited to attend the ceremony. That's what they said:

"Let us know if you need to travel outside Australia while your application is being processed or while you are waiting for your ceremony.
In most cases, we cannot approve your application while you are outside Australia. You must also make the Australian Citizenship pledge within 12 months of your application being approved, or the approval may be cancelled."

Check with your local council to see when their next ceremony date is.

I have seen one council saying "Our next Citizenship Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday 26 January 2023 (Australia Day)."

It may end up not being possible to get it earlier any way.

Finally got my ceremony invitation and then took the ceremony last 17 Sept 2022. The total waiting time from citizenship approval test to ceremony is a bit more than 6 months and from application start to ceremony is around 22 months! Anyway, thank you to those who've helped me with valuable information and insights and good luck to those still waiting.

I would like someone who attended the interview recently to share the experience with us please
I took the interview and test mid-Aug. Self with 2 Kids only, Wife applied later due to date of eligibility. I got 2 requests for information in the 2 weeks since clearing the test, but nothing after that. No idea whats going on, status remains 'Further assement' ! Is this normal with current timelines? It's been 2 months since clearing the test..

You say you received 2 requests for information in the 2 weeks after passing the test. Those requests might have a bearing on what is happening.

I didn't think that they would request anything after the test. We heard nothing after passing the test, until the notification of ceremony.

Some people are getting approved same day and others in months

I know a lady passed the test but they told her they will send a request for more info. So her application was not approved yet

Yeah, the questions were pretty straightforward stuff, and related to kids. They wanted the kids' Medicare copies first time, then came back a week later asking for mother's consent in a specific format(wording) the next time. I just hope after sitting on it for 2 months+ they don't back asking for another simple info.

Hi all,

My friend who applied for citizenship by conferral 5 months ago just received his notification of approval of Australian citizenship. He sent me the letter and I'm looking at it now.

On the website it says that 90% of applications are processed within 17 months.

For people who follow this thread or in the know, is it common to see applications processed in 5 months?

EDIT: He sent me a screenshot of his application from his immiaccount.
Date submitted: 24 Apr 2022

That's 5 months and 21 days.

Is it normal to not get an approval letter a day/week after the citizenship test and does it just go straight to the ceremony?

I am hearing conflicting stories about some applicants who didnt get an approval letter after the test and the next communication was to let them know the ceremony date.

Does anyone have a similar experience here please?

Wrote my test on Aug 16th, 2022 at Parramatta, no approval letter received and status is still received.

For decisions in August 2022:
From Date of application to decision.
  • 25% took under 7 months.
  • 25% between 7 months and 11 months.
  • 25% between 11 months and 14 months.
  • 15% between 14 months and 17 months.
  • 10% took over 17 months.

Please how long was the wait after passing the test and the notification of ceremony?

Applied 6 June 2022.
Interview/test 31 August 2022. Perth.
2 days later they ask me for more information (criminal history police check). I have no history. Don’t know why this wasn’t requested as part of the application. Uploaded requested documents 4 September 2022.
Still waiting for approval… and then the ceremony. Hopefully this year is still possible.

Someone above asked about the interview, they just verified that the documents I’d uploaded were correct and complete. They check your ID and contact details, then you go and do the test. It was very straightforward and only took about 20 minutes.
