Just make sure he fills in the customs declaration truthfully and if he has already declared all prior record I think he should be fine. When I watch 'border control' (always a reliable source of info hahahha) the ones they turn away ate because they did not declare it or criminal record was substantial

I so want to see this show. I'll have to see if I can track it down online anywhere.

EDIT: Track it down online LEGALLY, of course! Just specifying in case DIAC reads this. ;)

It's pretty easy to apply online for an AFP check. For immigration you need a name check only.
Thanks Whitney, it says on AFP website that:

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) can only provide National Police Checks for:
•residents of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), Jervis Bay Territory and external Commonwealth territories

But im not resident, would that still work for me?

First of all, that's only the first bullet point on the list on this page. Also, when they say resident they don't mean a permanent resident for immigration purposes, they mean that you reside here (do you?). I'm in perth and I had no issue getting my check done for immigration. Even if you reside overseas you're still on the list of people they can provide checks for.

ms taurus...we are in the uk and my bf just filled in a form and took about a week to get back to us. it was £10 and just listed the convictions, dates and fines. we are sending it with his application as obviously he ticked yes to criminal record and then.it asks to specify so just thought it would be easier...but the police checks for application are a certain type anyway..

My husbands record is a hell of alot worse and he's here with me now. Once the visa is granted he's safe. I was worried about him being turned away at the airport. He had his police cert and character references with him just incase and he filled in the landing card accordingly. All that happened was they stopped him to do a quick check. Hilariously they were filming border security at Brisbane airport when he arrived anyway. He was terrified poor thing!

He meets the character requirements so your application wont need to be assessed by VACCU (character assesment unit). As long as you include plenty of character references and show he's no threat to Australia i'm sure he'll be fine!

Yes it is on the landing card for all non-citizens to fill in.

I think maybe they have a way to check if you declared about criminal convictions on your visa application - or that is how it appears works on border security!!

I think its a case of ticking yes to criminal record. No need to worry just be honest and organised. Make sure he's carrying all the right documents - I made my husband carry everything but he didnt end up needing it. Super simple, the complicated part is covered in your visa application processing.

Tell him to stop stressing!! Mine did the same, drove me bonkers haha
