It sounds like you have done a fair bit of homework on this, which is good. Once you arrive in Australia it would be a good idea to open joint accounts together as well as get your name on any type of lease (car, home etc).
As far as registering the relationship, though I don't know how difficult it is to do, you can do it with just one partner living in Queensland.
Having gone through the partner visa application process recently, my biggest piece of advice would be to start gathering (perhaps even organizing) evidence now, this way when it is time to apply, you both are already a head in the game. Especially in regards to the evidence of communication while apart as that is a significant chunk.

From the sounds of it, you have both read over this already, but as a back up to being just shy of the 12 months of living together, it might be worth the extra trouble to do it.Use this application form to register your relationship as a civil partnership without a declaration ceremony. You need to be 18 or older and at least 1 partner must live in Queensland. Neither partner can be married or already in a civil partnership (or registered relationship).
