Hey guys,

Throwing this question out there to anyone in australia on a temporary visa.

Can you get government subsidies for education? Like going to tafe?

I'm on a 309 partner visa and i want to study a 1 year course in Tafe (Victoria), and i'm not sure if i qualify for any subsidies.

I hope someone can shine some light on this

Thanks!

Can not help more than that sorry my kids were doing private school secondary education in NT.

It does look like it is worth chasing up for you - if I were to guess you might end up with a slightly higher debt you need to pay off if that applies to TAFE courses like UNI.

i know there is a thread that confirmed 309 holders pay the same as australian citizens, but that was in 2013 and we ALL know how fickle minded the Aus government is.
There have been changes since then, I do remember NSW especially had some changes maybe 1-2 years ago as I remember someone posting about how expensive it was. However, all states have different rules.

This is what I found for TAFE QLD:

Eligibility rules apply to students wanting to enrol in programs that attract the TPTP funding, including:

- must be an Australian or NZ citizen or permanent resident visa holder
- must be a Queensland resident
- must no longer be at school
- must be aged 15 years or above
- must not be currently enrolled in another post-school qualification, apprenticeship, or VET in Schools (TAFE at School) program

These eligibility rules will apply even if the program does not attract a Queensland Training Subsidy (i.e. has a subsidised or concession price). Students who do not meet the residency and age criteria will be required to pay the full fee.
