Hi All :)
Hope you are all having a lovely day :)
I moved to Aus from UK 2 months ago with my boyfriend who is an aussie citizen. I'm currently on a tourist working visa but we will be applying for the de-facto visa.
This site has been such great help with starting to get together bits for the visa. The immi.gov website is great for official stuff but its sooo helpful to actually hear from people who are going through this application process and came out the other side! Its fantastic to see a community for this :)
Life in Australia is going well and I'm loving it so far, got a job far quicker than I expected so thats some pressure off!
The only bit I struggle with sometimes is where I'm going to make friends? I feel so silly saying that and know it will all come in time, but I feel I should at least be putting myself out there - its not as easy as when you were a kid in school ;) If any one has any suggestions about good places to meet people (away from the bar!), I would be all ears!
Take care and enjoy the rest of your day :)

Hi there Jemma!

First thing first, congratulations on getting a job!! that's brilliant.

Well well well, workplace is ur first step in making friends (in a more professional way). hang out with ur boyfriend's friends, maybe? i find that helpful.

I came here on a student visa about 2 years ago. haven't got that many friends either but yeah a few ones. hmmm some community events, maybe? join some social clubs if you're interested in any particular sport?

if you don mind me asking, where in australia do u live? i live in adelaide.

Hey :)
Yeah, found it on Gumtree of all places after I'd given up with the recruitment agencies?! I don't think I'll really meet anyone through work unfortunately, I'm 27 and theres not many people my age here?!
I'm living near Newcastle (shame, bit too far from Adelaide!). It does seem like quite a 'young' city so there is plenty going on....I might take a look and see if there are any sports clubs or anything...good suggestion :) friends are definately all about quality not quantity :)
How did you find it settling here? At what point did you start feeling really settled? I feel great at the moment (no homesickness....yet - waiting for that one to hit :/) but I'm pretty sure thats because I'm still in holiday mode.
You must have been very brave coming here on your own!

That's awesome. I'll give Gumtree a go when I'm back from holiday in the next few months. It was hard for me to find my previous casual jobs especially I'm on student visa.

Well, I just turned 20 yesterday actually haha. There's not much going on here either beside going to a bar/club but like I said I find hanging around my boyfriend's friends help a lot. I've never been to Newcastle either so I have no idea about the social life there.

Actually, I settled in Sydney first with grandparents and uncle'a family but then I decided to take a really risky move and that's moving to Adelaide. Never regret bcos I met the love of my life here. U may say that I'm so young to say that but that's what I feel about my boyfriend and our relationship. So I guess this is the point where I sort of feel settled in Australia (Adelaide specifically). It was REALLY HARD at first but then I found a casual job after 3 weeks of non-stop applying both online and traditional way (dropping resume from shop to shop). Lucky my colleges are all friendly people and I got an invitation to a birthday party and I just went without thinking lol. I then met a girl who's half white half Asian (I'm Asian btw) and we get along well so we still keep contact till today.

I totally understand that feeling of no-homesickness -yet that was the same with me when I just got here.

U're not alone. Everyone says so. And I'll take it as compliment. :D
