The Airport Train goes to Central and there are also mini Shuttle Buses from the Airport that'll take you direct to where you book to stay - maybe good to get somewhere and usually a free city map available so you do not get too lost.
Also some casual work agencies in Pitt Street it may be [ have a look in free magazines TNT and The Word ] and it could be that there could be some IT or other temporary work available until you find something more permanent that suits.
www.131500.com.au is public transport website and maybe get yourself a weekly green zone pass for starters and if you find Sydney a bit overwhelming after a couple of days or even to relax and let jetlag subside, jump on a ferry from Circular Quay to Manly, a great way to see the Harbour and then walk through the Corso to the Ocean Side for some relaxing sunshine and head clearing Ocean fresh air.
Might even be accommodation options over there and check www.gumtree.com.au and www.flatmate.com.au for possibilities.
