Hello all,

I am a 42 year old carpenter from stratford upon avon and have been waiting on a family sponsored visa, im told it may not be looked at until 2012 though :(

I tried state sponsorship but didnt have the funds required at the time (they wouldnt accept the equity in my house) and am having no luck trying to find an employer willing to sponsor me applying for jobs over the phone from here. This has been going on half heartidly for 2 years now.

I have decided to fly to Brisbane this weekend on an evisitor with the hope of finding an employer willing to sponsor me. I have my Australian Cert III in carpentry from vetassess and i'm hoping that applying for jobs "face to face" or from a Brisbane address at least, i will have more luck.

Will be tough leaving my wife and 6 year old behind for a couple of months but fingers crossed it'll be worth it and they'll join me in Aus ready for a toasty warm chrimbo.

The forums are great, I've had a good nose around and have picked up a lot of info. Any advice though would be greatly appreciated. about the job search or about Brisbane suburbs with good schools for a 6 year old etc.

I'll be staying at my brothers in Brighton. Wish me luck!

I'll keep you posted on my progress. (hopefully i'll have some)

Regards,
Billy

Brighton is not too bad a place to base yourself in Billy for there's a fair bit of residential expansion out the northern direction both coastal and inland a bit and then further north not too far you've got all the Sunshine Coast with a lot of different areas and always expanding too as many people from southern states see the region as one good for holidaying or retiring to.
Building work has its peaks and troughs and though we've not had an official recession in Australia there has been recessionary like developments with drop off of activity from peak times.

In coming in on an eVisa, I'd scan any documents and email them to yourself or even post them to your Brother for if you happen to get a customs search and stuff like that is discovered, there's every chance you would be queried on immigration aspects and even though visiting to check out the work opportunities is not illegal, it'll only take a suspicion that in fact you could look for work and you may not be allowed to enter.

If you find it's tough to get any interest up around where you'll be, do a bit of research on the NT and government indigenous building programs for if you're prepared to venture further afield to more remote places in outback Queensland, the NT, SA and WA you might find there are more possibilities as most east coast people will tend to hang about what they see as best part of Australia and it arguably is and there's often media coverage of the rest of Australia being short of skilled workers and even Perth is always seeming to expand because of resources projects and a lot of operations work on a fly in/fly out basis with Perth region as a base.
But good luck and hope all goes well.

thanks for the replies, I have considered looking for jobs with mining companies etc further inland. i work away from home frequently here too so it wouldnt be a problem for me to be away for a couple of weeks at a time. i think the mining companies work 2 weeks on 1 week off and i could probably expect better money too. I would like to keep my base as a Brisbane suburb though for my wife and sons sake.

i've had a good nose around the site now and its amazing how much ive picked up. Wanderer especially, you do a great job, ive found all your replies very informative and helpful.

I'll be sure to post about my progress (or lack of) in the coming weeks.

Cheers, Billy

Hi all,

Just thought i'd update on my progress. i must have applied for 400 jobs with no response whatsoever until today, Ive been offered a job with a Brisbane based construction company who is willing to sponsor me on a 457 visa. I couldnt be happier.

Thanks again for the help and advice ive found on this site, I'm off to celebrate now.

Billy
