Hi Watts, not living there but I know Albury reasonably well and a pleasant enough place of Australia it is with nice and warm summers and frosty winter mornings but being inland of the great dividing range you'll have more settled weather than closer to the coast.
And though that could be considered by some as a drawback, you've got the Murray River and Lake Hume for water recreation and though the southern Victoria coast is probably quicker to get to, there's some superb mountain drives if you want to take a route via the Alpine Way across to southern NSW coast for places like Merimbula or Tathra.
You've also got some reasonable wineries not too far away either over at Rutherglen and also due south from Albury you can find Brown Bros wines at Milawa, a nice drop it is too.
Make sure you take yourself for a drive over to Bright and Harrietville for Autumn Leaves time though you'll also get plenty in Albury itself as well as Beechworth which is a lovely living heritage town.

Thanks for the reply wanderer, ill take your advice on those tips, we had a week there at the beginning of july and really took a shine to the place, its immaculately clean, with a lot less traffic and the people seemed extremely friendly compared to where we are in the UK.
Hopefully through these forums we may meet other families who are also out in the Albury-Wodonga region.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for someone from the A-W area turning up for we do have limited Aussie members frequenting the site.
You might want to google up Albury Wodonga and you can usually find some local sites discussing local things.

Hi,

I see you moved to Albury in January. We are heading there for a week the beginning of May and hopefully out for good in July. Would love to hear how you are getting on? Where do you recommend there to live etc.

Best of luck x

Hi Sean and Lisa
We will be moving there permanently in June. Just going for a week in May to look at the town and check out schools and houses. We live just outside Drogheda in Ireland. My Hubbie is originally from Yorkshire.

Look forward to chatting

Hi Alburyahoy, we did a similar thing last June, we came for a week and drove around all over the place, ultimately it depends on what your weekly budget is and what is available at the time you come over.
We looked at sites like d0main and rea1estate and these are good sites for guidance but they are not updated regulary so you may see a rental the day before you leave the UK which is in your budget, then get here 2 days later and the house has someone in it...:(
Anyway a bit about us, we are a family of 3, Sean, Lisa and Evie(10) and we flew out here on valentines day from Stockton on Tees,aw.We flew to Melbourne and had about 6 days in a place called Black Rock and then drove on to Sunny (and locust infested) Albury....the locusts are dying down a bit now but when we got here the town centre was alive with them...they are attracted by the lights apparently, anyway as strange as it seems one month on and we have just got used to them(theres not many left now anyway).
Dont be put off by this, lol, it was freak wet weather earlier in the year which brought them on so it doesnt happen often.
We finally settled in an area called Norris Park, and got our daughter into Lavington public school, we looked at a few in Thurgoona but we didnt feel you got your moneys worth over there, they were all coming in at over $400 a week for rent and the houses we looked at were smaller than the one we are in.

Anyway ill get gone now its tea time but dont hesitate to get back if you need any information, we are going through the same thing and still waiting for our bloody container to arrive:eek:.
Speak soon.

Hi Sean

Not loving the idea of the locusts. Saw pictures of them online. That is one thing that worries me is spiders, snakes etc! I have actually been looking at Lavington. How is your daughter settling into school? We have an 8 year old son. We are staying in the Manor House Hotel when we come over in May.

We have our house on the market here. But it is very slow to sell anything in Ireland at the moment. We are going for a sponsored 457 visa and will apply for a 121 when we get there. How is the medical care over there on a 457 do you know by any chance? Especially get monthly medications.

Are you glad you made the move? Would love to meet up when we get there if you would have the time.

Sian x
