Hello,

I've just registered to this forum to know a little more about my real possiblities to find a temporal position in my field of study and experience.

As I am an Italian Citizen, I obtained the visa subclass 417, wich allows me to work for one year in Australia, but no more than 6 month with the same employer.

I didn't find in this forum a thread talking about this types of visa, so I am not really aware about the possibities that I'd would have once I travelled to Sydney.

I have a Bachelor Degree in business Administration and I have 3 years of experience as an Accounts Payable Officer for three international companies in Argentina.

So I think that my study and experience make me a good candidate for a position in Acc. Payable in Australia. But my main concern is about my Visa status, provided that, as I said, I can not work for more that 6 month for an employer.

It would be really helpful If somebody who was in the same situation or, for any reason, knows about the possibilities with this visa, gives me some advice.

Thanks.

Hi Martin and welcome to the forum, the 417 as you would be aware being a WHV which does allow working whilst still also being for a holiday and so Immi do see working to supplement having a holiday and not as an alternative short term work visa, hence the six months limitation.
There are essentially two options for you with it, one being to also do some regional work or WWOOF Australia , a great way to see the country whilst also getting eligibility for a second WHV.
Whether you do that or not you could look at whether you would be eligible to apply for an inependent skilled visa if you wanted to stay longer, though processing time could be lengthy and an alternate is the employer sponsored visa Employer Sponsored Workers - Workers - Visas & Immigration

You'll find more detail in the Visas & Immigration section.

Thanks for the quick response,

I heard about the types of jobs that are usually done in Farms and also about the different kind of visas. I phoned the Australian Embassy about two month ago so I could learn about them.

However, I would not like to work in a Farm. Actually It came to my mind travelling to Sydney and look for a Temporary job in an office. I am experienced as Accounts Payable officer so my idea would be working in my profession for six moth in Sydney. I found some opportunities that could match with that.

For example:

Accounts Payable Officer
About the Job

6 month contract
Growing Australian business
About our Client

A growing Australian business in the construction industry. Our client offers a close team based culture in a family friendly environment.

Job Description

Reporting to the Financial Controller you will be responsible for :
Processing of invoices, expenses and credit cards
Matching, batching and coding
Weekly EFT and Cheque runs
Reconciliations

The Successful Applicant

You will have several years experience in a similar accounts payable role within a medium sized business. Your experience using a large ERP system will be highly advantageous as will your excellent communication skills.

What's on Offer

6 month contract
Flexible working hours
$25 per hour

In this example, they are offering a 6 month contract, so I thought I could have an opportunity. However, I am beginning to think that not being a permanent resident would be an important disadvantage towards applicants which have permanent visas, even it is just a 6 month contract.:(

Thanks and, again, advices and opinions are really wellcome!!

Skilled people on WHV do pick up contract work and it is more a case of just being at the right place at the right time and once you have a job like that, it can open doors to others and perhaps getting an employer sponsorship.
Re farmwork, though you may not be interested, it does have the potential to give you extra time in Australia to find an employer sponsorship or you may even meet someone that could cause you wanting to be able to stay longer.
We often have posts like that re people having been on WHVs and because they did not use the opportunity to stay longer, they end up in something of a dilemma.
