Depending on which country you are from, you may be eligible for a ETA which should cover you visiting for up to 3 months.

I've never heard of anything less than 3 months. I've seen numerous posts of people wanting to come on the shortest visa possible so they can apply for an onshore partner visa and have work rights before 3 months is up, but so far it always seems 3 months is the minimum.
