I'm an Aussie with a Canadian partner who is about to embark on my visa application journey (De Facto visa, plan to apply in country, together for 2.5 years, living together for almost all of that) but I was wondering if I could get some feedback from those of you who have travelled this road before me.

My parter and I have a slightly unique situation but it's not that strange and we will have good evidence of our relationship including rent documents, bills and bank accounts (some already established, some still to come). I've done crazy amnounts of research online, read the Dept's website about 50 times and spent many hours here worrying myself sick reading everyone's stories, so I think we're prepared for what lies ahead. However, we are debating sitting down with a Migration Agent just to double check the few questions that we have and make triple sure we've done it all right and it will be approved. My question is - is it worth the money? I am just not sure if they will do or say anything particularly that will be more heklpful than our research and this forum has been. From what I can tell, it doesn't make a difference in the eyes of the Dept of Immigration.

Has anyone here used an agent in Australia to help their application? Do you think it made a difference?

Thanks in advance for any information :)

I have not used an agent but nearly all those I know who did were extremely unhappy with the performance of their agents and the cost. The only one who was happy is a hairdresser at the barber I go to. He is from England and was successful but told me it cost him over ten thousand dollars all up.

However I can say while googling information about migration I keep coming across ads from migrant agents who all claim your visa has no chance of being approved unless you pay them to help you. I really hate this kind of scaremongering just to drum up business.

Importantly, if you do use an agent make sure they are registered with mara;
https://www.mara.gov.au/
though from what I have read on other forums this does not guarantee 100% protection from shysters.

Unless your situation is very complicated you should be able to manage it yourself. I have also made a LOT of phone calls to the department of immigration for advice and to clarify some questions and they have always been very friendly and helpful.

Most people who have come to the forum with a relatively straightforward situation and good evidence do seem to have success if they follow the Immi references and make good use of their Checklists.
There are always going to be rejections but they will not occur unless there is some reason for Immi to do so.

we did n its no worth at all

hi
my bf n me decided to use a migration agent and to tell you the true it was the worts desicion we have made.
we were together for nearly 2 years but we didnt organise any information and also we dint have time (i was with student visa) so for us i thought it was easier someone who could help us. this lady recomended us to extend with another student visa while we get everything ready. we did i did an ielts course and collect all the information. 3 days before my visa expired she went to lodge the application when oh surprise she couldnt because whaen we extended the visa the case officer put a no further stay condition and she didnt know and of course we couldnt lodge it.
after this process she tryed to wave the condition (another mistake) and i had to go on a bridging visa E to avoid to be illegal (terrible situation) you cant work, study or travel.
after all this process, the waver was deny and i had to leave the contry and apply overseas. Before all this i asked her many times if the application was accurate and complete and she answered yes it was perfect.
so once again i trusted her (huge mistake). When i had my interview the firts thing my case officer said it was relatated to my application and said it wasnt enough information it didtn show anything, she asked for 1000 of thins more and also she said my agent was negligent and inexpert (can you imagine all this trouble just for this?) leave the country, my boyfriend, friends and work if we would have known for sure we could have done it better but because you think oyu dont know and these people have studied for it you trust them i have to say not all of them are negligent i just describe my experience.
Well, my case officer decided to deal directly with me no with my agent. i started sending information (nothing special something obvious) and 2 or 3 weeks after this i got my visa.
My recommendation is dont be lazy read properly and ask there are a lot people who have done this and they know a lot for they experience dotn waste your money
:)
